Impressive striped cliffs, a masterpiece of nature
The Susa Hornfels is a cliff with a distinctive black-and-light-gray stripe pattern that thrusts upward from the sea to a height of about 12 meters. Hornfels is a type of metamorphic rock that can be seen at locations throughout the world. The term is derived from a German word that means “hornstone,” and it separates into cubical fragments when broken.
The Susa Hornfels is the result of alternating layers of mudstone and sandstone that underwent metamorphism roughly 15 million years ago and hardened due to magma heat. Here on the shores of Hagi, nature has created a rare monumental masterpiece.
There is a footpath that leads to the bottom of the cliff. Visitors can look up at the rock strata from below and touch the rock surface to feel earth’s grandeur.
• Please be aware that the rocky terrain does not provide steady footing.
